Chapter 12

Kai

I’m watching a marathon of the Matrix when there’s a knock on my door. Deciding to ignore it, I reach for the remote and turn the volume up on my TV. With Nev out for a ride, there’s only one of two it could be, and frankly, I don’t want to talk to either right now.

Jealousy can be an ugly bitch sometimes, and I was man, well mortal enough to admit that I was. It was hard not to be when you hear your best friends having sex with the girl you’ve been making out with because you can’t have her like they are, thanks to your asshole of an alter ego.

It was bad enough that I heard them for the first time in the country. But then I hadn’t even kissed her yet, so I didn’t know what I was missing. Now, however, I knew better what they were enjoying on the other side of Declan’s door, and it brought out both my, and Hyde’s anger.

It’s why I didn’t turn around when she called my name. One look is all it would have taken, and I’d have been on her quicker than she could draw a breath. And if that happened, there was nothing I could have done. Hyde would have sunken his claws into her, and I’d never get him under control.

I was smart to keep walking and worked on containing him all night, just as I did every time after Nev and I were together. And this morning when she stopped by to tell me she was going on a ride, I pretended like I was on a call, and denied Hyde the pleasure of watching her mount that bike like I wanted her to do to me. He’d learn who was boss.

“Hey Kai,” Declan calls from the other side of the door, following it up with a pounding of his fist. “Come downstairs.”

“Why?” I call back, lowering the volume a bit.

“I have an update.”

I lay my head on the back of the couch and look up at the ceiling. “On?”

“Global warming,” he snipes. “On Sebastian fucking Crane, what do you think? Come on.”

“Fine,” I blow out an irritated breath and turn off the TV. “I’m coming.”

I hope whatever the update is, that it doesn’t take too long. Now that he and Luca have buried the hatchet with Nev, I’m not in the mood for their inside jokes or quirky smirks. Watching the two of them that day we played pool was bad enough.

While I’m glad she’s come to terms with everything that led to the stable fire, I’ll admit, I liked it better when I was the only one kissing Nev. I didn’t want Declan and Luca to override the closeness she and I had established because those two were intense, and when the three of them were together, I’m sure it obliterated everything in her mind, including me.

I toss my remote down and push up from the couch, running a hand through my hair, before making my way down the stairs.
